Save a Life: September Is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month

It’s important to discuss suicide prevention and awareness year-round but September is an ideal time to revisit the topic and provide resources and support to your employees.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that construction occupations have the highest rate of suicide. Another statistic by Construction Industry Alliance for Suicide Prevention (CIASP) states that the suicide rate in construction occupations is 49.4/100,000 - that’s nearly four times greater than the national average and five times greater than all construction fatalities combined. According to CIASP, this number spans all levels of construction, from laborers to skilled trades to management.

Understanding that the construction industry is at greater risk emphasizes the importance of suicide prevention awareness and the resources available. The Construction Financial Management Association established the Construction Industry Alliance for Suicide Prevention, a nonprofit organization to focus these efforts and provide information and resources. For more information about the Alliance and to download free flyers, posters, and other resources, visit their suicide prevention webpage.

These issues can be difficult to discuss in the workplace, so consider posting helpline information at your workplace and on your jobsites to provide support to your employees. OSHA’s suicide prevention webpage also provides links to a variety of resources and directs people dealing with work-related stress to get confidential support through the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.
